Chapter 9

“Where’s Kayla?” Chantelle asked when Gage entered the kitchen Sunday morning.

Her blond hair hung in loose ringlets over the back of her chair. He glanced at her again, amazed at how her face mirrored her sister’s, though Lillian’s now shimmered with a ghostly glow. He hoped Chantelle’s wouldn’t do the same anytime soon.

“I believe she’s drying her hair.” He tried to sound as though he didn’t know it to be a fact, since he’d just left her smiling smugly as she got ready in the bathroom. She’d thanked him yet again, when their shower had ended with both of them extremely satisfied, and Gage was beginning to understand her gratitude.

Each time they touched, she was moving further away from her past, and Gage was thrilled to be a part of helping her heal the emotional scars caused by Romero.

“She should be down soon.”

“Why don’t you tell my sister that you know exactly where Makayla—I mean, Kayla—is, and that she’s happier than she’s been in years?” Lillian asked, whisking batter in a glass mixing bowl. “She really needed that, you know.”

Gage was extremely thankful that the other occupants in the kitchen, Nanette and Chantelle, couldn’t hear his ghost. He stepped closer to Lillian and whispered, “Tell me you didn’t watch us.” He sure as hell had never anticipated one of his assignments watching him in the throes of lovemaking, and he sure wouldn’t have wanted anyone seeing what had transpired this morning between him and Kayla. Not because he was ashamed of anything, far from it, but that would horrify and humiliate her, and he wasn’t about to let anyone do that, not even her old friend.

Lillian shook her head. “Of course not. I simply sensed that both of you were immensely…pleased. And unless I really misinterpreted the sensations, I’d say Kayla was pleased at least a couple of times.”

Lillian used a ladle to spoon several circles of batter onto a skillet. “I’m so happy for her. She deserves this. She deserves you. We all deserved to have that eventually—normal lives with normal relationships, and happiness.”

“I’m sorry that he took your life from you,” Gage said. “I wish I could have stopped him before that happened.”

“I know. But it wasn’t meant for me to stay here longer. It’ll be better on the other side. I know it will. But I also know I won’t be able to let this side go until I’m sure my sister and Shelby and Kayla will be safe from him. I don’t want them going through what I went through, and I can’t stand the thought of him getting what he wants—all of us dead.” She frowned. “I don’t understand it—I’ve tried to sense Romero, I swear I have, but—”

“Nothing?” Gage was totally baffled by why Lillian Bedeau wouldn’t feel the presence of her killer, or at least sense his hatred toward her and the others that had put him in prison.

How could they stop him if they couldn’t find him?

“Not a thing.”

“What are you two talking about over there?” Nan asked.
